The Two Paths
“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is a path we keep choosing long after it stops saving us.”
At the end of the last blog, I left you with something that took me most of my life to understand: Pain wasn’t what kept me trapped. It was the suffering I created trying not to feel it.
Once you become aware of that, something changes. You start seeing the patterns. The reaction before the reaction. The tightening in your chest. The story your mind immediately creates. The walls going up. The need to defend yourself, control the situation, disappear, fight, shut down, prove something, or run.
Once you can see it, you arrive at a fork in the road. I’ve come to think of life as having two paths and one side quest.
The two paths are:
PAIN + SUFFERING or PAIN
Neither path gets you out of pain. One just stops you from creating an entire fucking life around it.
PATH ONE: PAIN + SUFFERING
This is the path most of us already know. It’s the original programming. Over years—sometimes decades—we built a particular kind of firmware from everything we experienced. Our conditions. Our families. Our heartbreak. Our abandonment. Our failures. Our trauma. Our victories. Our losses. Every time life hit us, our nervous system took notes.
Remember this. Watch for that. Don’t trust this. Protect yourself from them. Never let that happen again.
We became incredible pattern-recognition machines, and for a while, that shit worked. It kept us alive. It helped us predict where the next punch might come from. It taught us how to read rooms, faces, voices, energy, danger.
Some of us became so fucking good at surviving that everyone around us started calling us strong. Meanwhile, we couldn’t rest. Couldn’t trust. Couldn’t receive love without waiting for it to disappear. Couldn’t sit in peace without wondering what was about to go wrong.
That’s survival, and survival deserves our respect.
That version of you got you here. Don’t hate that person. Thank them, and then recognize when their job is fucking finished.
Because the same armor that protected you from pain eventually prevents you from experiencing life. The pattern that once protected you becomes the prison. You become reactive. Defensive. Guarded. Suspicious. You start fighting ghosts wearing the faces of people standing in front of you.
Your partner says something innocent, and suddenly you’re arguing with someone from twenty years ago. Someone disappoints you, and every abandonment you’ve ever experienced walks into the fucking room. Someone loves you, and instead of receiving it, you’re waiting for the moment they prove you right about why love isn’t safe.
That’s suffering.
This is where the conversation gets uncomfortable. Because eventually suffering becomes a fucking choice. Not the original wound. Not what happened to you. Not the pain you experienced. I’m talking about the moment you become aware of the pattern and continue handing it control of your life.
There is wisdom on this path. Decades of it. Your survival taught you things. Honor that wisdom. Carry it with you. Just stop living there.
Because eventually the survival strategy that saved your life becomes the very thing preventing you from living it. Staying there long enough becomes its own kind of death.
Not necessarily the death of the body. The death of your fucking life. Your relationships. Your joy. Your curiosity. Your intimacy. Your ability to be present. Your capacity to love without preparing for loss.
Which brings us to the second path.
PATH TWO: PAIN
This one scares the shit out of people. Because there’s no promise of comfort here. There’s uncertainty. There’s grief.
Surrender isn’t quitting; it’s releasing your grip on how you think the experience should unfold, accepting failure as part of the lesson, and trusting yourself to keep getting the fuck back up.
There’s the death of identities and patterns you’ve carried so long you forgot they weren’t actually you. The victim. The protector. The angry one. The abandoned one. The one who never needs anybody. The one who always has to be strong. The one who controls everything because control once felt safer than trust.
Walking this path means meeting those parts without letting them run your life.
I want you to understand…
YES!!
It fucking hurts!
Healing hurts. Grieving hurts. Forgiving hurts. Setting boundaries hurts. Being honest hurts. Outgrowing relationships hurts. Admitting you were wrong hurts. Taking responsibility for the damage you caused while you were hurting hurts. Letting yourself be loved after spending your entire life armored against it can hurt too.
The difference is this pain is moving somewhere. It isn’t looping. It isn’t asking you to replay yesterday for another decade. It is asking you to walk through it.
Somewhere along that path, something beautiful begins happening. You start looking backward differently.
You realize:
I’ve already survived worse than this.
Slowly, pain stops being proof that something is wrong. It becomes proof that you’re alive enough to fucking feel again.
Gratitude begins showing up. Not gratitude that terrible things happened. Gratitude that you survived them. Gratitude for what they taught you. Gratitude for the person you had to become. Eventually, gratitude that you no longer have to remain that person.
You begin finding forgiveness. For the people who hurt you. Not because what they did was okay. Because you finally understand that people bleeding all over everyone else are usually bleeding themselves.
Some of them never found the second path. They are still living inside the first one. Still protecting. Still projecting. Still surviving. Still passing pain from one person to another because nobody ever taught them what the fuck to do with it.
Then comes the hardest forgiveness of all.
Yourself.
For what you did when you didn’t know better. For who you hurt. For what you tolerated. For the years you lost. For all the times you abandoned yourself trying to keep someone else.
That’s where peace begins. That’s where self-love becomes more than some bullshit sentence written underneath a sunset on Instagram. That’s where gratitude lives. That’s where purpose lives. That’s where service lives.
That’s where you finally stop running from your grief.
Thank God.
Feel the fucking grief.
“Everything you refuse to feel will eventually find a way to fucking control you.”
The anger you buried. The grief you swallowed. The fear you pretended wasn’t there. None of it disappeared. You just gave it somewhere darker to drive from.
Feeling is fucking important.
Cry. Shake. Get angry. Grieve what happened and what never fucking happened. The childhood you deserved. The relationship. The person you were. The future you thought you’d have.
Feel it.
Strength isn’t becoming emotionless. It’s feeling everything without letting any of it take the fucking wheel. Feel anger without becoming violence. Fear without becoming paralysis. Grief without becoming hopelessness.
That’s command. That’s standing in the middle of your own storm without abandoning yourself.
We heal by finally allowing ourselves to feel what we’ve spent a lifetime trying not to. The more you practice, the faster you catch yourself. A trigger owns you for a month. Then a week. Then a day. Then an hour.
Until one day, you catch that motherfucker while it’s happening.
Oh shit. There I am.
You feel that wounded child wanting to scream, run, fight, defend, disappear. Except this time, the child isn’t driving.
The adult is finally in the fucking room.
You breathe. You observe. You feel. You choose.
That’s the work. Not controlling what you feel.
“Choosing who the fuck you become when you feel it.”
Instead of puking your unprocessed poison onto everyone around you, you become capable of showing up. For yourself. For your children. For your partner. For your friends. For the people you love most.
That’s the revolution. Not becoming someone who never gets triggered—and honestly, you finally understand that your triggers are a superpower.
Becoming someone who recognizes when the past is trying to hijack the present and has the awareness to choose differently.
Again, and again, and again…
Until choosing differently becomes who you are.
REMEMBER TO BREATHE!
You’re going to fuck this up. Of course you are. You’ve spent decades building these patterns. You don’t dismantle them because you read one fucking blog. This is practice. This is patience. This is the work.
Some days you’ll walk the second path beautifully. Other days you’ll find yourself three miles down the first path before realizing where the fuck you are.
Good. You noticed.
That’s awareness.
Turn around. Come back. Breathe. Choose again.
There is no finish line. Just keep showing up. Welcome to living. What a gift to have something to work on.
There is only the increasing amount of time you spend actually inhabiting your own life.
If you’re reading this right now, you’ve already given yourself a few minutes to look inward. Thank you for that.
AND THEN THERE’S THE SIDE QUEST…
Integration.
Because awareness without integration eventually becomes another collection of things you intellectually understand and never actually live.
Pay attention.
Remember I love you!
